DVD Burners

DVD burners come in two forms -- either external or internal. An internal DVD burner is inside the computer. It may come pre-installed inside the computer or you may need to install it after the fact. An external DVD burner connects to a laptop or computer through the USB port. External DVD burners are usually more expensive than internal ones.

DVD burners are electronic pieces of equipment which burn data onto a DVD by means of a laser beam. They are capable of reading CDs and DVDs and are able to write using different types of formats such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, and CD formats. They are similar to CD burners except they have superior capabilities. When considering whether to purchase a DVD or CD burner, remember that DVD burners are able to burn DVDs and CDs but CD burners are only compatible with CDs. Some DVD burners are capable of burning dual layers so that one disk can store twice the amount of information. One complaint that many consumers seem to have is that they are able to burn DVDs using some mediums; this is usually because they don't have the proper combination of software, hardware, and firmware.

Software

Software packages are usually included with most DVD burners. This means the software that works best with your DVD burner will be part of the package. Most software programs include applications like burning capabilities and a the ability to edit videos. Some companies give away DVD burning software as a free download from their website.

The only problem with this type of software is that it may have security issues -- the programs you pay for are usually more secure. Whichever type of software you choose -- free or paid for -- make sure that it is compatible with your DVD burner.
